Most Expensive Cigar in the World

The cost is only $440 per cigar, and they only come in boxes of 40. After you do the math, you can see why nobody has smoked one, yet. According to Reuters, the new limited edition Cuban Cohiba Behike cigar was just introduced today in Spain. Only 4,000 of these cigars were produced, so if someone wants to send me a couple, that still leaves 3,998 cigars for the rest of the world. On second thought, I should probably wait until after the trade embargo with Cuba is lifted. Another dream up in smoke!

PostHeaderIcon Wrapped or Unwrapped?

Easily one of the most common questions I am asked is about storing cigars. What is the best way to store them in your humidor –with the cellophane on, or off?

I often find myself leaning toward the off position (it’s the purist in me) but it’s just so incredibly pleasing to see your stogies neatly placed in your humidor, au-natural. But this makes you think. If storing your stogies naked is optimal, then why do manufacturers bother wrapping them? As with any debate there are pros, cons and myth involved on both sides.

Why Wrap?

Cellophane protects your stogies from you and other cigars. It is desirable because stogies secrete oil. If you are not careful this oil could mix with other cigars, which could drastically affect the characteristics of your prized sticks. This process can be beneficial if you have the same cigars stored together, but when you place different cigars in the same humidor it is generally a bad idea to unwrap them.

Leaving a cigar wrapped is also beneficial because it protects against damage. When you handle a cigar that is unwrapped, you remove some oils from the wrapper (meaning the outer leaves of the cigar) each time. If you handle cigars too often, you just might end up harming them.

Cellophane also protects your stogies if you want to carry them around with you. If you throw some in your shirt pocket, say, before leaving for the golf course, you might want to keep the cellophane on as it will keep the wrapper (again meaning the outer leaves) from tearing due to wear-and-tear and friction.

There is one very large misconception about cellophane—that it does not allow for proper humidification of your cigars. This is utterly false! Cellophane allows for adequate humidity to saturate your stogies within a humidor, keeping your cigars at a desired humidity, because it is porous. It also allows for adequate levels of air to circulate each cigars.

Why Unwrap?

After discussing the reasons for leaving the cellophane on, you might be wondering why you might actually take it off. Honest truth, there are many good reasons why some people also store their cigars without the wrapper.

As mentioned before, if you are storing only one brand of cigar in a humidor unwrapping may be beneficial, as it will allow the oils from all the cigars to mix well and may allow the bunch to maximize flavor distribution.

If you want to age your stogies the cellophane can inhibit the aging process by nearly 50%. Even though it is porous it still limits airflow around the stogie, which in turn slows down the aging process.

We always want to keep the best possible climate for our cigars. Cellophane unfortunately does not help here. In the regulation process, a cigar absorbs and transmits humidity; cellophane can slow this process in your humidor. Cellophane is quite like a screen door—it allows for air flow, but decreases the amount that flows inside.

A few little tips:

What do you do if you unwrap a few cigars but then later decide you want to carry them somewhere with you? Just place each stogie in its own sandwich baggie and you’re set! Don’t store them this way in your humidor though.

Some will leave the wrapper on during storage and remove it about a week or two before smoking the cigar. This may give you the best of both worlds.

There you have them, pros and cons for each side. One last piece of advice: the only way to figure out which plan is better for you is to determine what you actually want to do with your stogies!

PostHeaderIcon Has anyone ever ordered from Thompson Cigars?

I am wondering how good quality these are? Now i know everyone has different opinions on quality. But lets say compared to gas station type cigars like Black mild, Swisher Sweets, and such like that. Im looking at this magazine they sent me they are offering what looks like nice cigars for very little. Now im a business man myself so this could all be a promotion and then when you come back for more you buy more expensive cigars next time and humidifiers and all of that so it makes sense to me that they could offer some for very little. But i also have heard of some companys that get russian tobacco or other foreign very poor quality tobacco and offer it for a price as well and i dont think this is that kind of thing but is it similar like its cheaply made or anything? Im offered quite a few cigars in the business im in but id like to get some to keep in my office so i can offer a cigar to people when they come to see me. And thompson looks good but id like to hear from some people about their experiences with them. Also is 19 the usual age for shipping tobacco? Im just curious because i saw that in the magazine and it kind of struck me as strange i mean 19 is kind of random number thats kind of what set off a red flag in my mind.

Anyway any opinions or preferably facts about this company would be very helpful also if you have any favorite cigar brands that they offer that would also be informative and helpful as well.

Thanks!

I have ordered from them many times over more than twenty years. First their prices on national brands are a good deal compared to what they charge at the few places that carry good cigars here. Same Cohiba, Macanudo etc. My orders have always arrived quickly and been filled correctly.

As for Thompson brands, they are variable and I have found that the price is a good indicator of quality. But even the cheaper hand rolled are decent. Compared to the cheap ones like Swisher, I think they are a better deal. For about the same price as Black&Mild or Swisher, King Edward and the like you can get a real leaf wrapper from Thompson.

PostHeaderIcon How many different tobaccos are used in a premium cigar?

Filler, Binder, and wrapper are only the 3 major parts of the cigar…it has very little to do with the number or kinds of tobacco used…

The Wrapper consists of one leaf, and this leaf typically gives the cigar 60-80% of it's flavor…70-80% when a Maduro leaf is used.

The Binder also consists of one leaf, and usually this leaf is a “seco” leaf..Seco leaves are usually found in the middle of the tobaccoplant…(the levels of the plant are called “primings”) Seco is a milder tobacco.

Last you have the Filler. Depending on the guage of the cigar you can have anywhere from 3-8 leaves in the filler…These leaves usually consist of Seco, Volado, and Ligero tobaccos, the more Ligero the fuller the body (stronger).

But to answer as basic as I can, a typical premium cigar consists of around 4-6 leaves of tobacco..All could be uniquely different..but usually your talking about 4 different types of tobacco.

PostHeaderIcon Who remembers Cigar from the '90's?

What was it that stopped Cigar from racing? Was it in injury? Last I remember he went to stud but was then labled Cigar the Dud in breeding and the owners collected insurance money on him for lack of ability to breed. Is he still alive I wonder?

Cigar is at the Kentucky Horse Park. From the Park website: “The excitement of the racetrack and showring is brought to life by the elite group of champion horses that reside at the park’s Hall of Champions. Here, Thoroughbred legends John Henry and Cigar, champion American Saddlebred CH Gypsy Supreme, and Standardbred Pacers Western Dreamer and Staying Together are shown in daily presentations. March 15 – October 31″

Cigar didn't have any particular injury that I remember, but he was at the point in his racing career where he had nothing left to prove and his owner, Alan Paulson, wanted to retire him to stud.

As you said, Cigar proved to be sterile, and his owners collected $25 million from the insurance company that had insured his fertility. The company took possession of Cigar and agreed to allow him to be put on display at the Kentucky Horse Park.

I saw Cigar race in the Pacific Classic (Gr. 1) on August 10, 1996, the race that ended his 16-race win streak. He was an awesome-looking horse and certainly a champion to be reckoned with. I'm sorry that he turned out to be sterile, but I have a hunch that he wouldn't have been a success as a sire. His sire, Palace Music, never sired anything else even in the same ballpark with Cigar with regards to talent, and his dam, Solar Slew, didn't produce anything near as good, either. Cigar as a racehorse was not precocious and I don't think he had the kind of brilliance at a mile to sire the kinds of horses the American market wants. I have a hunch that Cigar would have ended up like Spectactular Bid– ultimately a failure as a sire.

PostHeaderIcon Tobacco Humidification and Storage

JS Humidifiers has over 20 years experience in humidifying the tobacco industry Worldwide with a client list that includes many of the world’s leading cigarette and cigar manufacturers.

Tobacco leaves, cut tobacco and paper are all extremely hygroscopic which means that they give up their moisture to the surrounding environment if the air is too dry. Dry air causes tobacco’s properties to degrade resulting in shrinkage, weight loss, brittleness, flaking, splitting and tearing. This causes tobacco to literally fall out of cigarettes, cigarette papers to misfeed on machines and cigar leaves to crack. Maintaining the right level of ambient relative humidity prevents all these problems by ensuring that tobacco, paper and leaves retain moisture at the correct levels, so maintaining their quality and ensuring that production can proceed at full efficiency.

Tobacco humidity issues

Tobacco leaves most primary production areas with a moisture content of 13-16% by weight. An ambient relative humidity of 60-68%rH is needed to maintain equilibrium between the air and the moisture in the tobacco.

After the initial production processes, moistened tobacco is normally taken to large bins or silos. Smaller tobacco plants will rely on box or cut tobacco stores. These areas must be maintained at 60-70%rH and 21-24ºC as they have large amounts of tobacco exposed to ambient air. If humidity falls below 50%rH then electrostatic charges can occur in most production areas even in filter rod areas where extra humidity is not normally called for. If conditions are maintained above 50%rH, then this will totally eliminate electrostatic charges.Cigarette paper must also be kept in equilibrium with the environment. If its moisture changes so will the dimension of the reel of paper along the exposed edges. These are then in tension as the paper runs, which can lead to tears, machine misfeeds and expensive downtime re-feeding the roll.

The maintenance of around 60-70%rH is critical in and around temporary storage systems. Cigarettes stored in a buffer for several hours or over a weekend will lose moisture if the relative humidity is not maintained, and are often scrapped due to drying out. Humidification means stored cigarettes can continue to be processed and wastage eliminated. Any loss in moisture will lead to poor recovery of tobacco in ripping rooms where production waste is broken up and re-used. These areas need to be maintained at 65%rH at 21ºC.

If you’d like to benefit from JS’ experience and find out what we can do for your tobacco sale production facility, either call our office or click here and complete our enquiry form. Those elusive “volatile oils” are supposed to evanesce if the tobacco isn’t stored in an air-tight jar. Similar to Frost, I transfer a just-opened tin into a 1/2 pint (jelly) Ball jar just after opening it—every tin. And most certainly anything I want to age or have decided to put back for awhile goes into a jelly jar. Keeping my tobacco as I do has afforded me bliss in a tin of Davidoff Flake Medallions that I kept sealed in a Ball/jelly jar for just six months. Radical improvement in the melding of the VA and Perique and the richness of the VAs. I can’t say enough how just six months of aging improved this tobacco! I’ve never gotten this much improvement in six months before.

A number of pipers say that there is a taste benefit to drying down tobacco by ~25% that you intend to smoke in short order. I like my tobacco to have enough moisture that I can feel it with a slight rub, and thus I have no comment here except to say that the guys who keep the tobacco in the tin with the top on are obviously part of the “dryer is better” group. And certainly the tobacco is not going to age in an unsealed tin.

Even if I were storing tobaccos just for the short-term, let’s say a month, I would still feel better about them if they were sealed in a jelly jar. As regards whether to wash new jars, I’d say wash them. Again I come down on the safe side. I piper also advised me that when you are rinsing a soapy jar, you do so in triplicate. Hot water sterilizes, but cold rinses better. He advocated a three-part rinse—hot, then cold, then hot. This is what I do.
